Another relief package could pass in July.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that if another coronavirus relief package is to happen, it would be during July, before Congress leaves for its August recess.
He said that the “shape” of the next stimulus package would be conditional upon the level of America’s economic recovery, something he felt lawmakers should have a better sense of in late July.
President Trump is not in favor of extending the $600 unemployment benefit expansion, which has deterred workers from returning to work. Still, the president has hinted that there could be another stimulus check in July. Many Americans remain unemployed with around 47 million people having filed new unemployment claims since mid-March.
One item being debated among lawmakers is how to continue supporting the many Americans who have been furloughed, laid off or had their hours reduced as a result of the pandemic. Senator McConnell said that having basic protections for these individuals is “extremely important,” though what form those protections might take is a point of debate.
